Here’s an interesting article on the current, dire, situation with our current banana the Cavindish. Basically, the same disease that wiped out the previous banana, the Gros Michel, and the impetus of the term “banana republic” and the song “Yes, we have no bananas” is on the move.

Apparently, the only reasonable way out of the current mess is genetic engineering.  Breeding is just too slow.
